Holocaust Memorial Day January 2010
The service was compered by Meera Rajasooriar, Deputy Member of Youth Parliament.
The opening welcome was given by the Mayor of Sutton.
This was followed by two audio stories from two local residents about the persecution that each had suffered at different times and in different wars. The first version was of Helen Goldman's story of persecution during the Holocaust in World War 2; the second was of persecution suffered by Luljeta Muka during the Serbian - Bosnian conflict.
There were performances and readings from various groups.
Two local schools renacted different types of situations where persecution was the key subject of their play.
Sonya Bartlett, Richard Lennard, Katie Doherty and David Weir represented different persecuted groups and gave readings.
There then followed a minutes silence in remembrance for all those who suffered the horrors of the Holocaust and the subsequent genocides since then.
The event was concluded by Lal Hussain MBE, Secretary of the Muslim Cultural & Welfare Association
