The following is my report on the Sutton SFC: We began operating in February last year and have since organised 11 events for which we have raised £1,828 for the shul. On 15 May ’09, more than sixty people gathered in Sutton Shul for Kabbalat Shabbat. In the Shul hall seven tables had been attractively prepared complete with Shabbat candles, which ladies lit shortly before the service began. The beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat service was led by Chazan Reverend Meir Lev, (formerly of Bournemouth Hebrew Congregation) whose soaring cantorial singing held us spellbound. Vases of fresh flowers adorned the windowsills of the exquisitely colourful stained glass windows ............
On Wednesday 14 January, another highly successful evening was organized by the New Shul Committee, on this occasion in collaboration with the South London Israel Forum (SLIF) Our guest speaker, Ronit Ben Dor, led a stimulating question and answer session on the subject of “Israel: Threats, Challenges and Hopes.“
On Sunday 8th March, ninety nine pupils from four chedarim in south west London met to celebrate Purim at Sutton Synagogue. Accompanied by the Cheder Heads of Richmond, Kingston, Chabad-Wimbledon and Sutton, ninety nine children and their parents, helpers and teachers excitedly gathered for an inspiring and memorable Purim event.
Lady Jakobovits, 81, the widow of the former Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits, died in hospital on Friday 7th May 2010. She was buried alongside her husband on the Mount of Olives. Our condolences and sympathy to her children and her memory will live on as a most remarkable woman loved by all and known to all as Lady J. Lady Jacobovitz was well known as the chief Rebbetzen – the wife of the late Lord Jacobovitz , Chief Rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth from 1966 to 1991. In that capacity she has demonstrated a remarkable commitment, love and support for her community, and an enduring and deep held faith. She has hosted and been hosted by the most powerful people in the land.
